Children
A child travelling with the parents or one of the parents is required proof of identity - a passport or a personal identity card when traveling in the Schengen area.
If a child is travelling to a foreign country with one of the parents, it is required to present to the border checkpoint officials only the child’s personal identification document. The written consent of the second parent is not required. In the case the child’s last name does not match with the last name of the parent with whom the child is travelling to a foreign country, the child’s birth certificate must be presented upon the request of the border checkpoint officials of the Republic of Lithuania.
Note. A child’s birth certificate is not an identity document valid for travel abroad.
A child’s birth certificate is not an identity document valid for travel abroad. A child travelling by plane must carry a passport or personal identity card when travelling in the Schengen area.
If a child is traveling without parents but with an accompanying person, the following documents are required:
- Written legally certified consent of one of the parents (certified by a notary, Lithuanian diplomatic mission or the official of a consular institution or an elder) and its copy;
- Proof of identity - a passport or personal identity card when traveling in the Schengen area.
Note. A child’s birth certificate is not an identity document valid for travel abroad.
When an organized group of children is travelling (tours or trips with sporting, artistic, scientific or other groups), a list of the children and accompanying persons, certified by the signature and seal of the travel organizer and a copy of this letter are required. The list with the names, its copy and the consents of the parents (if traveling outside the Schengen area) should be kept by the travel organizer.
Children’s identity documents are valid for a shorter period of time than the documents of adults (2-5 years), therefore you are advised to check the date of expire before the trip. Documents must be valid throughout the entire journey - the documents that expire during the trip are held invalid.
If a child is a Lithuanian citizen returning to the Republic of Lithuania, the passport or personal identity card is enough (personal identity cards are only valid in the Schengen area). Consents and additional documents are not required, even if the child is returning without parents.
If a visa is required, infants and children can travel only with the adult specified in the visa.
Parents’ written and notarized consent is not required if:
- A child is travelling to a foreign country with one of the parents;
- A child is travelling abroad without parents, but with an accompanying person, to the Schengen area;
- A child is under 18 years of age and married – has gained full civil capacity;
- A child has been recognized as capable – emancipated by a court.
2. When a travelling child does not need parental consent?
If a child is travelling abroad without parents, but with an accompanying person, outside the Schengen area, the certified consent of one of the parents (certified by a notary, Lithuanian diplomatic mission or an official of the consulate) and its copy is required.
When a child is travelling with an accompanying person, the written and legally certified consent (certified by a notary, Lithuanian diplomatic mission or an official of the consulate) must contain the following information of the child and the accompanying person:
- First name;
- Family name;
- Date of birth of personal identification number;
- Data of the document proving personal identity (passport or identity card): number, expiry date and issuer.
If a child is a Lithuanian citizen returning home to the Republic of Lithuania, a passport or personal identity card is enough (ID cards are only valid in the Schengen area). Additional consents and documents are not required even if a child is returning without parents.
